Most of us know how blackjack works or can at least grasp the basics of the game. In many cases, we’ve been playing it since we were little. Aside from snap, pairs or solitaire, it is one of the first card games that we learn to play. However, many players are still not comfortable enough with their blackjack skills to sit down and wager real money on the game.

If you are thinking of having a crack at blackjack for real money but haven’t played before, there are a few things you should consider.

What is Blackjack?

Blackjack is a simple card game. As you may be aware, the basic premise of the game is to try and build a hand as close as you can to 21 but not going over that figure. Doing so will see you bust, and out of the game. At the end of the game, the player (or dealer) with the highest value hand wins.

Aces count as 1s or 11s, face cards count as 10s, and all other cards count for their numerical value. You are given two cards initially and can hit (take another card or cards) or stand (keep what you have). At least, that’s a rather basic explanation of the game.

Assuming you know the rest, there are a few other things which can help you in your quest playing blackjack for real money.

Are There Any Strategies Which Guarantee Wins?

Unfortunately, no. There is no such thing as a guaranteed winning strategy for any casino game, blackjack included. However, there are a handful of strategies which can help cut down your losses, as well as a few tips or tricks which can point you in the right direction.

Players interested in blackjack strategy should check out the Martingale System, which involves doubling your bets every time until you win, then reverting to your original stake when you do. This won’t guarantee a win, but it will ensure that your losses aren’t too severe. Other systems such as Basic Strategy may also be worth a look if you are just starting out in the world of real money blackjack.

Other strategies aren’t really strategies at all, but more a selection of handy hints and tips you can use to avoid heavy defeats. We’ve incorporated a few of them below to help get you started.

Don’t Buy Insurance – Ever

One very handy tip is this – never buy insurance. You should make that a part of any blackjack strategy you play. Insurance can be taken when the dealer has an upturned ace, and it costs half your original stake. You will win 2:1 if the dealer does have blackjack, but this does not occur as often as you might like to think.

Look for Those Variants

Players are going to want to find the ideal blackjack game before they tinker with strategies. Some strategies are better suited to some variants and not others. You should explore several blackjack variants and see which ones suit you best. Some have very different rules and payouts from the others, such as Switch (which allows you to trade cards between hands), Surrender (which allows you to quit and lose just half your bet), and Exposure (which allows you to see the dealer’s cards).

When playing blackjack variants, players should shy away from games which offer 6:5 payouts for blackjack. These games typically increase the house edge marginally and are therefore not as ideal as standard 3:2 blackjack games.

Read Up, Practice and Play

Reading blackjack books is another great way to learn strategies.

By doing so, you can identify specific strategies (often developed by the best in the business) and incorporate them into your game.

Players will find a wealth of free games out there on the net to play, and it is with these free games that you can practice what you have learned from blackjack strategy books or online guides without losing a penny.

You can also play numerous blackjack variants for free, to find the ideal one for you, before you wager real money on it.

Let’s Begin…

Now that you know a few things, it is time to look for a blackjack strategy (we recommend the Martingale System to start off with) and put it to use with free online Blackjack games. Once you’re comfortable, try deploying the same system on real money games. You may be surprised at how effective they can be, even if they don’t guarantee a win.
