How Does Virtual Reality Work with Phones

You probably know that there are virtual reality systems for PlayStation, PC, and other gaming consoles. Virtual reality is already taking over gaming consoles, think PlayStation, Xbox and PC. With today’s technology the world of virtual reality has also been extended to your smartphone; but how does it work?
What is Virtual Reality?
VR as it is more commonly known stands for Virtual Reality, With the advances of technology today and devices being more and more cost-effective and affordable to a wider audience, it's clear to see why people are jumping on the very fun bandwagon.
Virtual reality is an immersive experience in the digital world. Unlike playing in 2D on a computer screen or playing games through your TV and games console, VR is a sensory experience as well. A VR headset is an enclosed piece of headgear that the user wears over the top half of the head.
Encompassing the eyes and ears. This means you will be able to see this virtual world whichever way you look, left right up down – total 360 and you can see it all. The sound is directed at your ears to create a sensory alignment to the game you are playing, do you have to listen out for footsteps or a whisper, with the headset on you will be able to experience that in-game.
It's possible to think that smell might one day be incorporated into gaming as well, taking you even deeper into the gameplay.
There is also virtual Desktop, this stripped back version of having your desktop with you in an unusual digital space.
Right now though, most people are more aware of VR and not the Virtual Desktop which is pretty impressive by itself but for this article lets stick with VR and how you can access it.
So how does it actually work?
It looks much more complicated than it is and is actually pretty user friendly. First, you will need to work out which VR headset is compatible with your mobile phone. Once you have one that will work in sync with your phone you can move on to the next step of putting your phone into the front of the headset.
PlayStation VR, for example, would project the image of what you are seeing to the headset itself. Whereas with your phone and headset you are seeing virtual reality straight from your phone's screen.
So just explain how it works a bit more; the virtual reality experience on a smartphone works front the headset having lenses built for a virtual world. The lenses will take whatever image is on display and modify it to give the user an immersive experience.
These lenses work by taking a flat image and turning it into a 360-degree environment, even in some cases you can take a flat image and turn that into a panoramic view as well. It'll make the user feel more connected than looking at it in 2D.
To be able to experience this futuristic type tech you will need to have installed an app that is compatible with your phone and the headset. Once this is done though however you will be up and running to be able to experience VR right at your fingertips.
Tracking your head and eye movements
Something that you do need to know here is that virtual reality systems for phones are not quite yet as advanced or well developed as those used for PlayStation, Xbox, or PC. However, these systems are quickly advancing in the way they function and how well they function.
One thing to remember though and this should be fairly obvious, is that the systems for phone VR are not as advanced as the devices built specifically as VR headsets. For what they are though they are pretty advanced for functionality on your smartphones.
Head and eye movement will enhance the users’ experience of the VR headset. Basically when you look up the image in front of you also moves up – you turn and look to your left, you will see the left of the image, so on and so forth.
The tracking system on phones is not completely functional yet but there have been great strides in this part of the tech in recent months to get it fully functioning.
There's another piece of software called eye-tracking. This allows a VR headset to actually recognize where and what you are looking at. The device will be able to focus on specific points and spots that correspond with where your eyes are looking. The idea of this function is to make VR seem more realistic.
Although smartphones have come a long way, they do not have hand controllers. This is something that seems to be in the works, to be able to keep up with the big gameplay giants. For now, though gamers that want to experience gameplay with headsets and controllers will need to pay on PlayStation and Xbox games that support VR devices.
Mobile VR – What smartphones work with virtual reality?
As much as nothing can compare to the original, sometimes the original is just not attainable or accessible to all peoples. To be able to experience places or cultures through a 3D virtual world, would be a great educational tool.
Being able to create a world where all types of academia can access new educational material would be a great advantage to students. It could be seen as long-distance education and connecting students from around the world to share knowledge. To have lectures with world-renowned leaders in their fields could spark new interest in any subject.
One of the biggest games to come from Google is the Daydream. This is currently compatible with Google Pixel series, the Samsung Galaxy series and the Motto and Huawei series. More phones might be compatible in the future. Realistically, most of the phones that aren't compatible currently will be in the future through software updates.
This program does need a headset which costs £99.00 to use on your phone. Once you have this you will experience one of a few leading games on the market. Google is currently making the Google Daydream a standalone product for full VR.
Samsung Gear VR
The newest version of the device comes with a controller as well. Much like the Google Daydream it well built and comfortable for the user. This device will cost you around £70.00
This VR gear is compatible with only a select number of phones in the Samsung range. The Samsung Galaxy S20 and the Note 10 range, however, are not.
The google cardboard is designed for Android phones that don’t support Google Daydream or the Gear VR or and good relatively cheap alternative to VR headsets.
Cardboard games and apps all work on an Android 4.X phone or above providing they run at least iOS8.
A Google Cardboard viewer is needed, but these are cheap. The prices and quality vary. You can get literal cardboard versions too.
Google actually made a version for £15 made from cardboard. You can have a go at making your own, too. iPhone VR can very easily be used with Google Cardboard. iPhone models from the iPhone 5S onwards will support VR headsets that are available for iPhones as well.
A Windows phone VR experience will not be the best. There are very few apps for a Windows phone as well. However, there are cheap headsets that will fit that phone.
